VISI at Vancouver Public Central Library
Following a very successful evening of song and story-telling on the life and works of Robert Schumann last June, VISI is adding an exciting new series of lectures on song at the Central Vancouver Public Library (VPL).
Friday, February 25th, 2011 at 7 p.m.

We begin the series on February 25th with soprano, Phoebe MacRae and pianist, Laura Loewen. These two talented and accomplished women will bring you and evening that delves into classic English song remixed by contemporary composers.

Find out what happens when Benjamin Britten reinterprets Henry Purcell and what Louis Andriessen does to some of your favorite Beatles tunes! It's sure to be a hilarious evening.

Phoebe MacRae, soprano, and Laura Loewen, piano, present an evening of classic songs with a fresh artistic spin.
The past and the future are holding hands when composers B. Britten, L. Andriessen, L. Larsen and A. Copland remix and reinterpret Henry Purcell, Emily Dickenson, and the Beatles. These are worlds that go together well.
Warning: Mostly in English, some funny.
"Paris at the turn of the 20th century" April 7th
On April 7th, soprano, Robyn Driedger-Klassen and pianist, Terence Dawson will take you to Paris at the turn of the 20th century.
Find out what went on in those famous cafés where poets, singers, dancers, painters, writers and composers met.
Following the International Exposition, Paris was obsessed with art from the Orient and in those smoky, wine-drenched cafés, surrealism came to being shortly after.
Francis Poulenc and Georges Auric will be sure to make an appearance along with music inspired by Spain, Greece and from across Asia.

To launch the SONGFIRE Festival of Song and 3 weeks of great courses and conversations at VISI 2011, Rena Sharon, VISI's Artistic Director and pianist extraordinaire is joined by some stunning singers who'll reveal the secret arts of Lieder appreciation with a hilarious and enlightening hour of ideas and beautiful songs."
