Biographical Information:
Specialist in German music of the 19th and early 20th centuries and the social history of British music in the same period. Author and editor of many books, including The Musical Life of the Crystal Palace, George Grove, Music and Victorian Culture, and six books on Brahms. Contributor, The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and The Dictionary of National Biography. Reviews editor for Music Analysis, 1982-87; member of its advisory board, 1988-present. Former faculty, Goldsmiths College. Lecturer at King's College, London; Royal Holloway College, London; Universidad de Alcalá, Barcelona; and Centre Cultural, Barcelona. Awarded FRCM (Fellow, Royal College of Music) in 2005.
