SONG: Fusion of text and tone, instrument of story-telling, expressive vault of human experience, ideas, and emotion. Join us at VISI 2010 for immersion courses, concerts, and conversations about Song – 3 weeks in June spanning millennia of art and ideas. Singers, pianists, teachers, composers, musicologists, poets, performance researchers, humanities and social science scholars, multi-media artists, listeners; the interpretations and dramatic performance of Art Song depends on inspired collaborations.
New horizons of Art Song interpretation and performance are explored through intensive training programs and collaborations with internationally-renowned artists, scholars, and researchers. From masterclasses to theatrical stagings to music neuroscience studies, VISI is a banquet for the mind, heart, and imagination. THE SONGFIRE FESTIVAL OF SONG

VISI and nine Partners in Song have joined forces to create a month-long Festival featuring some of Vancouver’s great music collectives. Hear the artists of Chor Leoni, City Opera, Elecktra Women’s Choir, Erato Ensemble, Lyric Singers, Music on Main, Phoenix Chamber Choir, and the Turning Point Ensemble at venues across Vancouver including UBC, SFU, The Silk Purse, Bard on the Beach, the Cultch and St. Andrew’s Wesley, and others. SONGFIRE lights the fuse for a month of stunning, passionate, soaring SONG!

Explore the expressive dimensions of Art Song and stretch your boundaries with new approaches to the Art Song recital stage. VISI’s main training program includes: private coachings and masterclasses with internationally renowned artists, a residency with the New Triad for Collaborative Arts, studies in poetry and other humanities, dramatic diction and recitation, theatrical staging and improvisation, traditional and alternative performance explorations. This is a course that will transform your views about Art Song and its relevance in the world.
Collaborative Piano Studies is a component of the Theatre of Art Song Program. A program of daily studies dedicated to the special skills of the collaborative pianist’s craft is woven into the Theatre of Song program. The program begins with the New Triad for Collaborative Arts residency. From June 7-18th PROFESSOR CAMERON STOWE will be in residence, joined by an array of distinguished pianists visiting throughout the program until June 23. Collaborate with Faculty singers in coachings and performance, study privately with faculty pianists, work in vocal/piano partnerships and study collaborative dynamics with the coaches from New Triad and other facilitators. This program is fused with the complete Theatre of Art Song program of courses. The piano lid is always open at VISI, as is the conversation!
Tuition for Theatre of Art Song/Collaborative Piano Studies: $1200 – early bird cost before May 1.
Accommodations are available on campus (not included in fee). Limited scholarships are available.

VISI offers a mentorship program under the guidance of DR. BENJAMIN BINDER, musicologist and collaborative pianist at Duquesne University, with distinguished visiting scholars and artists. The program includes daily lectures in diverse fields, private consultations, observation of performance classes, and recital collaborations with art song duos.

Tuition: $350. (For June 7-12, 2010). Visits outside of these dates can be arranged with Professor Binder with daily fees of $60.

Join the VISI experience at a Retreat exploring innovative pedagogy in Art Song Interpretation and Practices. To teach song is to engage Poetry, Philosophy, History, Dramatic Recitation, Musicology, Psychology, as well as the traditional challenges of technical and stage craft. An array of lecturers and artists offer a banquet of ideas and inspirations, concerts and conversations. PROFESSOR SCOTT MCCOY, President of NATS, Professor of Voice and Pedagogy, Director of the Presser Music Center Voice Laboratory, and author of the voice science and pedagogy textbook, “Your Voice: An Inside View”, is among our many distinguished speakers, also including PROFESSORS ROSEMARIE LANDRY, DARRYL EDWARDS, FRANÇOIS LEROUX – Director of the Centre de la Mélodie Française – and more experts in the many fields of Art Song interest.

Teachers are also welcome to AUDIT ALL SESSIONS THROUGHOUT THE VISI PROGRAM to suit personal schedules and interests.

ART SONG COLLABORATIVE READING SESSION

VISI is proud to collaborate with the Canadian Music Centre in presenting an afternoon workshop session for new poetry/music fusions.
Hosted by Centre Director Bob Baker with Tara Wohlberg and moderated by Tetsuro Shigematsu, a Canadian radio broadcaster and comedian. This session offers readings and discussion of new works with distinguished visiting VISI faculty artists Alison d’Amato, Laura Loewen, and Gayle Shay, joined by baritone Michael Broder, pianists Michael Park, Damien Jinks and soprano Michelle Koebke.

Tuesday, June 8th, 6:30-8:30 PM - Choral Adventure and Celebration of Samuel Barber’s Music: Art Song Goes Choral This workshop, led by Kevin Zakresky, will expose amateur singers to the choral works of Samuel Barber in a way that focuses on interpreting texts as a group.
