- For graduate students and active scholars with degrees in musicology, music history and music theory who are pursuing or are interested in developing a research project related to art song
- Individuals not affiliated with a graduate program and scholars from related disciplines are encouraged to seek special permission to enroll
Over the years, scholars and performers of art song have cultivated their own individual storehouses of knowledge, experience and insight, but hitherto these two communities have remained relatively aloof from one another. Performers sometimes find it difficult to embrace the assertions of scholars who lack practical experience and communicate in specialized academic language, while scholars sometimes assume that performers make interpretive decisions based only on their personal impulses, without regard for historical context or analytical understanding. With this broad stereotype in place, it’s no wonder that scholars and performers often have so little to say to one another.
The Song Musicology Mentorship Program at VISI aims to dismantle this state of affairs. By fostering a productive interdisciplinary exchange between scholars and performers of art song, we can engender more thoughtful and creative performances, stimulate strong musicological research that is also sensitive to the needs of performers, and contribute to the vitality of the practice of art song as a whole.
We seek musicologists, music historians and music theorists who are interested not only in pursuing research projects related to art song but also in making that research available and accessible to performers. In this program, scholars of art song will be able to work intimately with singers and pianists, observing and interacting with practitioners of art song at close range. Scholars will have the opportunity to have a direct impact on performances by collaborating with singers and pianists in the development of a concert experience. We will also learn from each other, sharing our work through lectures, presentations, seminar discussions and individualized mentoring sessions, all the while making valuable professional connections.
Some highlights of the program:
- Attend daily lectures and presentations on art-song related topics by program director Dr. Benjamin Binder of Duquesne University (http://www.sites.duq.edu/music/bios/binder.cfm ) and faculty of the University of British Columbia in musicology and other relevant disciplines such as French studies, German studies, literature, poetry analysis, history and creative writing
- Share research work and get feedback from peers in our own scholarly seminar devoted to participants’ individual projects.
- Receive one-on-one mentoring on your project from Dr. Binder, Dr. Richard Kurth (Professor of Music Theory and Director of the UBC School of Music), Dr. Kevin McNeilly (UBC Professor of Poetry) and VISI faculty artists including Dr. Alison D’Amato, Professor Rena Sharon, and others. Barbara Heyman, biographer of Samuel Barber, will be in attendance from June 10-13. Professor Cameron Stowe (Collaborative Piano, New England Conservatory, Juilliard) will be present from June 7-18.
- In Week One of VISI Guest Artist Faculty will include Professors Julie Simson, Benjamin Butterfield, and Kenneth Griffiths.
Week Two ( June 14-18) will feature studies in French Mélodie and Surrealism, featuring François LeRoux, Director of the Centre de la Mélodie Française, Professor Rosemarie Landry, and Professor Sima Godfrey (UBC Professor of French Poetry).
- Participate in a collaborative performance project with a singer-pianist duo. Scholars will act primarily as dramaturgs, supplying historical, critical and analytical information to the performers while working with them to create an interpretive vision for a set of art songs that will be performed for the entire VISI community.
- Have the opportunity to give lectures and presentations to VISI faculty and students as well as pre-concert lectures and other presentations open to the general public.
- Full access to all concurrent VISI programs and activities
We welcome those who are interested in any topic related to art song. However, some scholars may be especially interested in this year’s “Immersion Studies” topics:
- The Romantic Self – Schumann and his Legacy
- French Mélodie and Surrealism
- The Songs of Samuel Barber
Activities related to “The Romantic Self” will take place during the same time as the musicology mentorship program (7-12 June). Those who are interested in the remaining two topics may wish to extend their stay at VISI beyond the end of the program proper or make special arrangements to create their own mentorship experience for a period of time after 12 June.
Dr. Benjamin Binder will be curating “The Romantic Self.” Events may include the following topics:
- Lecture: “German Romanticism and its Discontents: The Post-Kantian Subject in 19th-Century German Culture and Song”
- Lecture: “Toward an Understanding of Innigkeit in Schumann’”
- Lecture: “Romantic Self-Consciousness in Schumann’s Lieder: Taking a Fresh Look at the Relationship Between Voice and Piano”
- Lecture: “Romantic Irony, Heine’s Irony: Did Composers Get Either One?”
- Lecture/Master Class: “The Political Self in German Romantic Song”
- Workshop: “Life and Art in Schumann’s Myrthen”
- Lecture/Concert: “Greek Mythology in German Romantic Song”
